Bernedoodle vs Goldendoodle: What’s the difference?

Are Bernedoodles and Goldendoodles really different? In the end, they have the same parent, they share the same teddy bear exterior, and they’re both an excellent choice for house pets.

Well, as easy as it’d be to consider the two breeds as one, there are actually a couple of differences that break them apart. We’ll talk about it here.

Bernedoodle vs Goldendoodle – An Overview

Bernedoodles are a cross between Bernese mountain dogs and poodles; that’s why they’re otherwise called Bernese mountain poodles. On the other hand, Goldendoodles are a cross between golden retrievers and poodles.

So, both breeds only share one parent, which is the poodle. But that’s not the only thing they share. They’re both friendly, active, energetic, and they’re well-known for being excellent house pets.

Here’s an overview of their most significant differences.

Bernedoodle Vs Goldendoodle – Appearance Differences

Although both breeds are strikingly similar, you can quickly identify them by their few differences. The most significant difference is the coat colour.

Bernedoodles have tri-coloured coats, often a mix of rust, clear white, and black. Meanwhile, Goldendoodles are mostly golden or red. They can come in black or grey colours, otherwise called phantom. However, the other colours are more common.

As for their hairstyles, Bernedoodles are on the shaggy side, while Goldendoodles are more curly. The difference is barely noticeable, but it’s still good to know.

The Goldendoodle is the smaller one between the two breeds. Bernedoodles are more similar to their Bernese mountain parents, which are known for being big dogs.

Bernedoodle Vs Goldendoodle – Temperament Differences

There are a few differences between Bernedoodles and Goldendoodles in temperament. If you’re about to adopt either breed, you ought to know them.

Goldendoodles get along with almost everyone, just like golden retrievers do. They’ll be okay around strangers, and they welcome new pets just fine.

That’s why they make for great house pets and nasty guard dogs!

On the other hand, Bernedoodles don’t go along well with strangers. They’re a bit suspicious around new people, and they’re wary of anyone coming close. They’re still pretty affectionate with their families, though and they make great pets.

We have outlined Bernedoodle traits in more detail on a separate post.

You should also know that these dogs get anxious when their owners leave. They cherish human companionship, and they may get nervous when they’re separated from their owners.

Goldendoodles aren’t big on separation anxiety. They’re independent dogs, so they’ll be comfortable being on their own.

Wrap Up

To wrap up, Goldendoodles are smaller and friendlier with strangers, and they live longer. Bernedoodles are similarly adorable, but they suffer separation anxiety when you get away, and they’re wary around strangers.

Your choice should depend on your lifestyle. If you’re willing to provide enough affection and be around your dog most of the time, you’ll be okay with a Bernedoodle. If you don’t have enough time for that, a Goldendoodle is the way to go.
